The Accidental Carer 100 tips for meeting the challenges when caring for a stroke survivor Nicole Banerji 9781848762114 Books
The thing to understand about this book is that it is not a niche book, far from it. You do not have to be caring for someone who has suffered a stroke to profit from it; the advice dispensed by the author applies to anyone whose life is turned upside down, above all by the death of someone close. Nowhere is this better illustrated then in the two sections at the end of the book called `Coping with loss' and `Tying up loose ends'. The author calls these `Challenges'. Her method is to open up a discussion of a particular topic - like `Getting information from the professionals' - and after exploring it to round off with two summaries - `Making sense of it all' and `Ten top tips'. I suppose the challenge that faces everyone who has to deal with a serious life-changing event is `Dealing with the emotions'. For a person who on her own say-so is not overly emotional, her words come across as especially charged. Here she is on page 29 - "But what really took me off guard was the need to deal with other people's emotional reactions". For `other people' read the woman who shared her dad's house, whose baleful and unhelpful shade only complicated the author's continuing efforts to do the best by her dad. This is a powerful and stirring read, affecting too because you feel that the author did do her best by her dad; at the end she had nothing to blame herself for. If you are burgled, and it is the first time, it is a shock but what to do next is generally well understood - police, insurance etc. Catapulted into a completely novel situation she found daunting to say the least, the author's preference was always to act but what exactly to do? It is her feisty account of how she came up with answers that makes this book so rewarding.
